The Full Cheek Gag double-jointed in Sweet Iron was developed for riders seeking a bit that offers both clear lateral guidance and light poll action. It helps the horse lift in the shoulder area while staying straight. The combination of the guiding action of the full-cheek side pieces and the elevating effect of the gag rings makes this bit a versatile training tool. It is particularly suitable for horses that tend to lean or fall onto the forehand, and helps them gently to balance better and work more from the hindquarters without creating resistance. The Sweet Iron mouthpiece oxidises naturally during use. This stimulates salivation and supports a soft, accepting contact. The result is a smoother contact and a calmer, more confident way of going. The double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly across tongue and bars, prevents the nutcracker effect and conveys a stable, pleasant feel. Horses that benefit from balanced pressure distribution and prefer a bit that follows the natural shape of the mouth usually respond particularly well to this design. It is also outstandingly suitable for horses with a lower palate, as the double-jointed construction reduces upward movement towards the roof of the mouth and offers extra comfort. The full-cheek side pieces stabilise the bit laterally and support guiding the shoulders, which is particularly helpful for young or still unbalanced horses. Care & cleaning
After every ride rinse the bit with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Over time a slight patina forms through the natural oxidation of Sweet Iron that can improve taste and acceptance. Store dry and check regularly for smooth, even wear. Make sure the bit is the right way round: the star must be on the left side, the Velari logo on the right.
